The run is the room's perimeter, which is 2 × (length + width), less the width of each door.
We add your waste allowance (10 per cent is a common allowance for mitres and cut-offs), divide by the length of one piece, and round up to whole pieces.
What it can't tell you.
- It treats the room as a rectangle. For an L-shaped room, add the rooms' runs together or run it once for each part.
- A wide opening, such as a cased archway, can be counted as a door if you set the door width to match.
- It doesn't count corner blocks, trim around cabinets or built-ins you won't run baseboard behind.
These are estimates from common rules of thumb. Check them against your supplier's advice and your own plans before you order.
Questions.
How much baseboard do I need for a 12 by 10 foot room?
The perimeter is 44 ft. With one 3 ft door the run is 41 ft, and with 10 per cent waste it is 45.1 ft, which is 6 pieces of 8 ft baseboard.
Does the calculator take doors off the baseboard?
Yes. It subtracts the width of each door, starting at 3 ft. For a wide opening such as a cased archway, set the door width to match.
Which baseboard piece lengths can I choose?
8, 12 or 16 ft. Pick the length your supplier stocks and the calculator rounds up to whole pieces.
How much waste should I allow for baseboard?
The calculator starts at 10 per cent, a common allowance for mitres and cut-offs. You can change the number.
Is what I type saved or sent anywhere?

What if you didn't have to do this by hand anymore?
You just typed a room's measurements in yourself. QWIKIT Plans is desktop software for Windows and Mac that we're building to read rooms, walls and openings from a floor-plan PDF instead. The app is not released yet, and joining the waitlist is free.
